Caring for Oriental Rugs

Jack Smith • May 25, 2023

Cleaning oriental rugs requires special care to preserve their beauty and longevity.

Here's a step-by-step guide to help you clean your oriental rug:

  1. Preparation:
  • Start by checking the rug's label or contacting the manufacturer for specific cleaning instructions. Some rugs may require professional cleaning.
  • Choose a suitable location for cleaning, preferably a well-ventilated area with a clean, flat surface, such as a patio or garage.
  • Gather the necessary cleaning supplies, including a vacuum cleaner, mild detergent, clean white towels, a soft brush or sponge, and lukewarm water.

2. Vacuuming:

  • Begin by thoroughly vacuuming the rug on both sides to remove loose dirt, dust, and debris. Use a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment or a handheld vacuum for delicate rugs.
  • Pay special attention to the rug's fringe or tassels, as they can accumulate dirt easily. Gently vacuum the fringes to remove any dirt or particles.

3. Spot Cleaning:

  • Inspect the rug for any stains or spills. If you notice a spot, act quickly to prevent it from setting.
  • Mix a small amount of mild detergent with lukewarm water to create a cleaning solution. Test the solution on a small, inconspicuous area of the rug to ensure it doesn't cause any discoloration or damage.
  • Using a soft brush or sponge, lightly dab the cleaning solution onto the stained area. Avoid scrubbing aggressively, as it may damage the rug's fibers.
  • Blot the area with a clean, white towel to absorb the moisture and lift the stain. Repeat the process until the stain is no longer visible.

4. Full Rug Cleaning:

  • If your oriental rug requires a deeper clean, you can either wash it yourself or take it to a professional cleaner. If you choose to wash it yourself, follow these steps: Fill a large tub or clean outdoor area with lukewarm water and a small amount of mild detergent.
  • Gently submerge the rug in the water, making sure it is fully soaked.
  • Use a soft brush or sponge to gently scrub the rug in the direction of the pile. Avoid scrubbing too vigorously to prevent damage.
  • Rinse the rug thoroughly with clean water to remove any soap residue. You may need to repeat the rinsing process several times.
  • Carefully squeeze out excess water without wringing or twisting the rug.
  • Lay the rug flat on a clean surface or hang it over a sturdy clothesline to air dry. Avoid direct sunlight and high heat, as they may cause fading or shrinkage.

5. Post-Cleaning Maintenance:

  • Once the rug is dry, vacuum it again to fluff up the fibers and remove any residual dirt or debris.
  • Use a soft brush or your hand to gently restore the rug's pile, if necessary.
  • Regularly rotate the rug to ensure even wear and prevent prolonged exposure to sunlight, which can cause fading.
  • Avoid placing heavy furniture on the rug for extended periods, as it can flatten the fibers.

Remember, if you are unsure about the cleaning process or have a valuable or delicate oriental rug, it's best to call Xtreme Clean since we have experience in handling these types of rugs. 863-412-4862

If your couch has a "dry clean only" label or has a fabric cleaning code of "S", it is best to follow the manufacturer's instructions to avoid damaging the fabric. However, if you need to clean it yourself, you can try the following steps: Vacuum the couch thoroughly to remove any loose dirt and debris. Check for any stains or spots and treat them with a specialized fabric cleaner designed for dry clean only fabrics. Always test the cleaner in an inconspicuous area first to ensure it doesn't damage the fabric. If the entire couch needs cleaning, you can try using a fabric cleaning foam or solvent designed for dry clean only fabrics. Apply the foam or solvent according to the manufacturer's instructions and use a soft-bristled brush to gently work it into the fabric. Use a clean, damp cloth to remove the foam or solvent, being careful not to saturate the fabric. Allow the couch to air dry completely before using it again. It's important to note that cleaning a dry clean only couch yourself carries some risk of damaging the fabric. If you are unsure or uncomfortable about cleaning it yourself, it is best to seek the services of a professional cleaner.
